Apart from the paramilitary influences, I'm increasingly distrubed by the use of these sites for bullying. We recently buried a young member of our congregation who'd committed suicide and, it appears, he was addicted to these sort of sites which led to him 'researching' others where, apparently, allegedly, young people with no social life or skills end up egging each other on with regard to suicide. There have been numerous instances of 'copycat' behaviour in places as far apart as Belfast and Bridgend, where suicide becomes almost a 'fashion' for despairing young people. I don't know that I'd like to link Bebo, or others, to these tragedies, but it seems that the isolation in front of a PC magnifies the anxieties of youth and adolescence, and there clearly needs to be more curbs on their constant use, be it in exposure to paramilitarism, bullying, porn or whatever else is skewing their views of the world.

My husband, children and I went a drive Dunseverick harbour a few weeks ago. I had never been there before (absolutely magnificent!) I can understand though why lots of fishermen lost their lives around those waters though as the seas were extremely rough.

I wish that I could tell you more about Hannah McLoughlin but unfortunately there are no longer any living relatives of my grandfather's generation (her son's). I can tell you that my grandfather (eldest boy) was called John - possibly after her own father.

Can you tell us a bit more about Hannah McGloughlin/McLaughlin/McLoughlin please? There are a lot of McLoughlins on the north coast of Co Antrim at the time of Griffith's Valuation in 1861. The nearest to Dunseverick harbour are John McLoughlin of Currysheskin and John McLoughlin of Craig.

There's an Alexander McGlaughlin at Dunseverick Mill in 1803 married to Rose Frizel. They have a daughter called Betty. They may have had other children.

I am currently researching my family history and wondered if you know anything about the McGloughlin family - my great grandmother Hannah McGloughlin's family came from a fishing family from Dunseverick - her father and all her brothers were apparently killed at sea (born some time in the 1800's. Can anyone help me? Would there be records?

I thought that not only did such fencing need planning permission, but that razor wire should not be used less than six feet above ground for health and safety reasons. There is also razor wire along the side of the burn, at ground level - does this keep rats and wild animals out or in?

I got the information for 'Balleyoglogh' from the National Archives in Dublin - see reference under title. I think the data was tabulated under nearly 40 headings!!

Until the access legisation is sorted out, this sort of access issue will be more and more common.

This issue may actually be a blessing in diguise. It will help alert everyone to the problem and people will hopefully start lobbying government. In the long term, this farmers blocking actions will probably cause his land to be "officially" opened up through legislation.

I believe a single instance in the south of a landowner being successfully prosecuted after a person fell over a cliff in his land has given landowners the excuse they needed to block access.

But change is on the way, the same way it has come to england and scotland.

Thank you as well. My gggg grandfather William Kane was from Blackside as well. This appeared on his marriage certificate to Margaret Jamieson. I believe there is a connection to the Jamieson farm.

Dear Keith and colleagues,

I heard from the NALIL blog about the plan to hold a genealogy event in Ballymoney.

I think this will be a great opportunity to re-connect Ballymoney with some of the people worldwide who have had to leave family and friends and familiar places to emigrate.

I suggest that it might be possible to organize a 1718 homecoming weekend, for descendants of people who left the Bann valley for New England. This was one of the first organized emigrations from the area, and it's an important and largely forgotten story, forgotten at least officially in New England.

It might be possible to work with other funders to help set something like this up. I have mentioned the concept to the CEO of the Ulster Scots Agency, who was interested in following up and making contact re how they could help. Assistance in kind, if not actual finance, might be available.

I am suggesting that activities for a group such as this might involve for instance attending a Sunday service in a local church, possibly Aghadowey Presbyterian, from which the minister and many members left in 1718. Also talks, visits, exhibitions and maybe a reception where people could meet up with (very) long lost relatives of the same surnames.

If Keith or anyone planning it wants a chat, I'll be happy to help and to get involved.

Keith, family history should fit very nicely with the units on local and global citizenship and history that are part of the personal understanding theme. There's also a cross-community theme and it would assist access to funding.
